Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the U.S. She's worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, commentary and analyses of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in the popular culture. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes associated with women in popular culture, she seeks to bring attention to targeted exploitation of women as well as other classes of individuals in the internet space. Sarkeesian, who holds a Master's in the field of Social and Political Thought in the field of social and political thought from York University, is a popular public speaker. She has spoken at TEDxWomen XOXO festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. Interested in issues concerning gender and feminism since at an early age, she created her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while studying at the University. She had a plan to start a web-based series examining gender-based representations in video games and found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. But the harassment did not discourage her. It only strengthened her as a feminist journalist. She has won many awards for her contributions to feminism.
